Basilio and Buboy, two boys from a coastal town, sail off for Manila in search for a better life. Instead they find themselves squabbling for inhospitable space by the breakwater of Manila Bay. Yet amid the rubbles of destitution, Basilio finds redemption in Paquita, a prostitute whose life is fueled mainly by drugs and alcohol. Basilio’s affecttion sets Paquita on the road to recovery.
Basilio has always had a deep communion with the sea. It is here that the body of his father lays rest. Now, sank deeper in poverty, the sea becomes his savious when he uncovers a pouch of jewelry that’s been washed up by the breakwater. However, when he sells a piece to help out a fellow dweller in need, news spread out to Dave, a policeman and former client of Paquita, who then accuses Basilio of stealing. One incident leads to another that winds up the tragic yet tender climax. the film dazzles with sterling performances from tyros Katherine Luna and Kristoffer King. Others hail it as a resurgent pience of work from the Philippines not seen since the days of Lino Brocka.
